This book defines gender in terms of religious and cultural concepts, and explains the impact of religion and culture, as well as gender and development in a patriarchal society. It views gender from a historical perspective, focusing on the gendered differentiation of roles and societal expectations, and relates this to violence and HIV/AIDS. This book also deliberates on women’s liberation movements and addresses issues of gender empowerment and development. Furthermore, the book discusses the various dominant faiths, including Hinduism, Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, the Baha’i faith and the various religious of the Near East, as well as those of ancient Greece and Rome. Finally, the book emphasises the need for gender mainstreaming in all government and NGO programmes to ensure that gender concerns and imbalances are addressed. <p> <b>About Author</b> <p> Alice P. Tuyizere teaches Religious Education Methods in the School of Education, Makerere University. Gender and Development is based on research she did for her PhD entitled ‘‘An analysis of Gender-based Violence as a Hindrance to Equity in South-western Uganda’’.
