This book traces the development of multi-party parliamentary democracy in Tanzania from the appointment of the first two chiefs to Tanganyika's Colonial Legislative Council(LEGCO) in 1945 to the present day. It highlights the subsequent struggle for supremacy between the Parliament and the Executive, particularly during the period from 1968 - 1992 when the parliament started to evolve from a token rubber-stamping organisation to a vibrant multi-party institution.
