Loy loses her father to AIDS when she is in Primary Five, and her mother falls sick regularly. Unlike her sister, Tereza, however, she is disciplined and hard-working. Through nurse Hellen, a family friend, she gets a job as a maid in the city. She takes advantage of this opportunity to provide support for her family and put herself firmly on the road to selfreliance.
